Ray and Lorry LeMarie have created some delicious specialty foods products including reduced-sugar jams, relishes, spice blends, sauces and salsas.  I taste-tested one of their jams at the Whole Foods Winter Farmers Market in Westport, CT, and it tasted like pure fruit.  Yum!  To find out more about their products, contact:

Remember those giant green eggs I found a while back?  Well they are emu eggs and they came from Woozie Wikfors and WalkingWood.  Woozie told me that emu eggs have a much milder flavor than regular eggs and produce a much lighter, fluffier product, which makes them great in quiches and souffles.  While the individual emu eggs are a little pricey, one egg goes a long way, and would make an gourmet addition to an ordinary Sunday brunch.  WalkingWood’s website isn’t up yet, so if you are interested in finding out more about emu eggs, contact Woozie at:

Met Susan Atkisson, of Java-Gourmet, at Whole Foods Winter Farmers Market in Westport, CT.  She had traveled all the way from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, and I’m glad she did.  Her product line or gourmet spice mixes and sauces are delicious!  The base ingredient in all of them is coffee, which Susan told me helps to enhance the flavor of the other ingredients.  I tried out the Java Rub for fish and the whole family loved it!  Check out Java-Gourmet  to learn more about their products.

Check out Connecticut Natural Soapworks, at Sunflower Farm.  I had a chance to sniff some soaps at the Whole Foods Winter Farmers Market  in Westport, CT.  The scents were amazing!  Especially like the Pumpkin Spice and Lilac.  Sabrina, the Soapmaker, gave me a sample of their Chai Chapstick.  It’s like having a chai latte, but without the calories!

Went to Blue Hill at Stone Barns a few weekends ago.  They have animals for kids to see, greenhouse and gardens, wooded paths to walk, a cafe to grab a tasty morsel at…  Is the perfect weekend outing!

Spring Cleanse:  Day 7

Final Day!!!

Whoever came up with the idea to do a cleanse for 7 days should be slapped silly!  Oh, wait… that was me.  I was great through Day 5.  By Day 6 I was ready to throw in the towel.  Today, well, I made it to 4:30pm then bagged it.

I love eating healthy, but I am a huge foodie.  As glad as I am to have cleansed my diet for a week, I am even more glad to be able to have pizza and drink wine.

This cleanse was a good kick in the butt, even for me.  It’s a good reminder that healthy eating isn’t about having the perfect diet, but about improving our diet to improve our health and quality of life.  Moving forward keep in mind that the cleaner your diet, the cleaner your body will be and the more efficient it will run.

My last day… wasn’t a great one…

Breakfast:  eggs with leftover veggies and rice

Snack:  seltzer water— was meeting with a client

Lunch:  oranges, potatoes, cashew butter— I was rebelling against my cleanse, tired of eating all the same healthy crap (isn’t that an oxymoron?!)

Snack:  quesadilla.  Threw in the towel a few hours premature and man did it taste good!

Diner:  salad, pizza, wine.

Stay tuned as I’ll be posting ways to carry the clean eating concepts of this cleanse through to our daily lives.

Happy (and mostly health) eating!!!

Spring Cleanse:  Day 4

Today was a good day.  I had consistent energy throughout the day.  Surprisingly I have had few cravings for carbs or sweets the past couple days.  I even had coffee today sans-sweetener and was able to get it down without cringing.  Went to a health seminar that offered complimentary lunch and was afraid the food would be way off the cleanse.  It wasn’t perfect, but I was able to manage okay.  Didn’t touch the roll.  Had the salad but no croutons.  Roasted chicken breast was good, served with veggies and mashed potatoes.  Didn’t eat the potatoes cause figured they would be loaded with cream.  Stayed away from the lemon sorbet dessert.  Making it through Saturday is going to be cake!

Breakfast:  Leftover rice, chicken and veggies from last night with an extra scrambled egg

Snack:  Banana with nut butter

Lunch:  Salad, roasted chicken with veggies

Snack:  drawing blank… oh yeah, edamame and some orange and grapefruit

Dinner:  Salad with grilled orange-ginger chicken and quinoa

Dessert:  Strawberries…yum!
