spring cleanse

It’s that time of year again… time for us to clean house from a winter long hibernation.  It’s time for Spring Cleansing!!!  Last year, I embarked on this week long, no caffeine- no alcohol, super clean eating, fresh juice drinking, spirulina popping cleanse.  And I felt great…minus the killer headache.  My suggestion for this year:  if you are a coffee addict as I am, either plan to cleanse over a long weekend or vacation, or opt for cutting back on coffee instead of cutting it out completely, nix the creamer and sweeten with natural agave nectar.  That’s my plan anyway.  If you want to suffer through the debilitating coffee-withdrawing pain, then be my guest…

Here’s what I’ll be doing.  Feel free to tag along!!!

Spring Cleanse:  Day 7

Final Day!!!

Whoever came up with the idea to do a cleanse for 7 days should be slapped silly!  Oh, wait… that was me.  I was great through Day 5.  By Day 6 I was ready to throw in the towel.  Today, well, I made it to 4:30pm then bagged it.

I love eating healthy, but I am a huge foodie.  As glad as I am to have cleansed my diet for a week, I am even more glad to be able to have pizza and drink wine.

This cleanse was a good kick in the butt, even for me.  It’s a good reminder that healthy eating isn’t about having the perfect diet, but about improving our diet to improve our health and quality of life.  Moving forward keep in mind that the cleaner your diet, the cleaner your body will be and the more efficient it will run.

My last day… wasn’t a great one…

Breakfast:  eggs with leftover veggies and rice

Snack:  seltzer water— was meeting with a client

Lunch:  oranges, potatoes, cashew butter— I was rebelling against my cleanse, tired of eating all the same healthy crap (isn’t that an oxymoron?!)

Snack:  quesadilla.  Threw in the towel a few hours premature and man did it taste good!

Diner:  salad, pizza, wine.

Stay tuned as I’ll be posting ways to carry the clean eating concepts of this cleanse through to our daily lives.

Happy (and mostly health) eating!!!

Spring Cleanse:  Day 4

Today was a good day.  I had consistent energy throughout the day.  Surprisingly I have had few cravings for carbs or sweets the past couple days.  I even had coffee today sans-sweetener and was able to get it down without cringing.  Went to a health seminar that offered complimentary lunch and was afraid the food would be way off the cleanse.  It wasn’t perfect, but I was able to manage okay.  Didn’t touch the roll.  Had the salad but no croutons.  Roasted chicken breast was good, served with veggies and mashed potatoes.  Didn’t eat the potatoes cause figured they would be loaded with cream.  Stayed away from the lemon sorbet dessert.  Making it through Saturday is going to be cake!

Breakfast:  Leftover rice, chicken and veggies from last night with an extra scrambled egg

Snack:  Banana with nut butter

Lunch:  Salad, roasted chicken with veggies

Snack:  drawing blank… oh yeah, edamame and some orange and grapefruit

Dinner:  Salad with grilled orange-ginger chicken and quinoa

Dessert:  Strawberries…yum!

Spring Cleanse:  Day 3

I’m weak.  I admit it.  I caved.  The withdrawal headache from having no caffeine for two days was too much.  My brain was so foggy yesterday and I was completely unproductive as a result.  In fact I had flash backs to a trip I took out of the country where no coffee was available… had a four day headache.  Not worth suffering like that again.  Better idea:  cut back on caffeine and continue to sweeten with agave nectar and use soy milk instead of cream.  If any of you have been experiencing the same torturous headache, feel free to add some caffeine back into your diet.  Just don’t go overboard.  I was able to manage just fine cutting back by half of what I usually consume.

All in all, today was a much better day.  Headache gone, obviously.  And energy levels felt pretty stable throughout the day.  Surprisingly I haven’t been having a strong cravings for foods not allowed on the cleanse.  This cleanse was designed to be a major wellness kick in the butt, and feelin’ great about accepting it the challenge.  Four days left and feeling optimistic.

  • Breakfast: two hard boiled eggs, avocado, and grapefruit
  • Snack:  celery with nut butter
  • Lunch:  salad, left over salmon, broccoli and rice
  • Snack:  banana and almonds
  • Dinner:  “stir-fry” with rice, veggies (left over) and chicken, cauliflower on the side
  • Dessert:  yet to be eaten, but probably an apple, maybe drizzled with a bit of honey

Spring Cleanse:  Day 2

Yowzah!  Caffeine withdrawal left me with a headache all day, rendering my brain relatively useless and unproductive.  Was able to fend of my temptation to break down and get a nice steamy cup o’ caffeinated joe though.  Hoping tomorrow it will be better.  Other than that, the day went pretty well.

  • Breakfast:  oatmeal with apples and almonds
  • Snack:  more apple with peanut butter
  • Lunch:  salad with quinoa, avocado, pine nuts and chicken; dressed with lemon juice and olive oil
  • Snack:  hummus with veggies
  • Dinner:  salmon w/ rosemary and garlic, brown rice, broccoli, grilled onion
  • Dessert:  fruit salad with fresh grated ginger

How’d your day go?

Spring Cleanse:  Day 1

Considering I, like many of you, have never done a cleanse before, I think the Spring Cleanse ’09 started off pretty darn good today!  Giving up coffee this morning was really tough, so I allowed myself some decaf sweetened with Agave nectar and soy milk.  Also for my bedtime snack, I grated a little dark chocolate over my fruit.  It wasn’t a perfect day.  But life isn’t about being perfect.  It’s about being balanced and doing our best.

This was my best today:

  • Breakfast:  Eggs with cauliflower and potatoes, decaf coffee
  • Snack:  Home-made bean dip with cucumbers
  • Lunch:  Salad with chicken and quinoa
  • Snack:  Pear with nut butter (raw almond butter is great!)
  • Dinner:  Basmati brown rice, grilled chicken, roasted Brussels sprouts and zucchini
  • Dessert:  Fruit salad with plum, peach, orange and shaving of dark chocolate

Few quick tips to make life easier throughout the week:

  • Chop up a bunch of lettuce and veggies ahead of time so you always have salad fixings on hand
  • Keep a rotisserie chicken on hand for fast and easy meals
